Basic kitchen layouts: GALLERY KITCHEN

Kitchens in a straight line or gallery kitchens are common in older, smaller apartments. All the main working stations are located in one straight line - a refrigerator, a hob and a sink, with an intermediate working surface.

Gallery kitchen plan.

Since there is usually a lack of space in a gallery kitchen, compromises are often necessary. It must be ensured that there is enough work space, and at the same time the distances between individual work stations must not be too long. Therefore, the oven is mostly placed under the hob. If it is possible, leave 60 cm of free working space on each side of
the sink and hob, and 90 cm between the sink and the plate.

Classical style kitchen in straight line.
Storage space in base units is replaced with a larger number of wall units. Missing working surface can be replaced with a table or some sort of cart. Ideally next to the kitchen there is also a lounge. Thus, the main function of the kitchen is the preparation of food, and not the storage center - in this case, the kitchen becomes an effective place for work.

While the kitchen in the straight line (if not too short or too long) is optimal for one chef, it is harder to work if there is more than one chef in the kitchen.

The gallery is well-run in smaller apartments. In larger areas, however, straight line can be completed by a peninsula or an island.
